ABSTRACT: Tähe suremine algab etapist, mil suurem osa vesinikust on ära kasutatud ehk vesinikud on muutunud heeliumideks. Sellest tulenevalt väheneb tähe energiatootmine ja tasakaal eralduva kiirguse rõhu ning suure gravitatsioonijõu vahel on rikutud. See põhjustab tähe tuuma kokkutõmbumist, mille jooksul tõuseb seal temperatuur ja rõhk ning ägenevad termotuumareaktsioonid. Kuid samal ajal paisub tähe väliskest, mis jaheneb. Sellest tulenevalt paisub täht mitmekordselt ja tähe pinnatemperatuur väheneb. Nii muutubki täht suremise etapil punaseks hiiuks. Tähe tuum aga tõmbub kokku ja kuumeneb. Heeliumi tuumad hakkavad ühinema alles siis, kui temperatuur on jõudnud 108 K-ni. Mingisugusel eluetapil tähe tuumasünteesireaktsioonid lõpevad ehk ei ole enam energiat tulevasteks tuumareaktsioonideks. Sellisel juhul tõmbub täht gravitatsioonijõudude mõjul kokku.
